About Us
Bishop Gundulf's Morris of Rochester would welcome your company at one or all of our stands, to watch us dance or to join us for a song and a pint in the pub after the evening stands. Our dancers range in age from 5 to 75. Morris is for all ages, sizes and physical condition.
Morris dancing comes in many guises: Cotswold, Border, Molly, Northwest, and Rapper and Longsword formally divided by regions; you will now see Cotswold performed in Yorkshire and Northwest in Kent. With beginnings lost in the eons of time you are watching the continuing of an English tradition. Wherever people enjoy good music, dance and the odd pint or two you will find the Morris.
Rivalry is strictly friendly; members will change sides, form new sides or dance in more than one side. The cross pollination of ideas and music is good for the future of Morris dancing and keeping the tradition alive. Evening and weekend stands often involve several sides, styles and ages, we always enjoy each other’s company. Please come and watch, enjoy the spectacle and compare the various styles.
We dance out from April to September. Most evenings will find us at a friendly pub for a dance before retiring to the bar for a rousing musical session and a pint or two. If you enjoy singing, playing or just listening please come along and join us for the evening.
Now the official plug — we also dance at private functions & fetes for a small charge. If you would like further information please ring Gill, our Squire, on 01634 672548 or email her at squire@bishopgundulfs.co.uk. Please book early to avoid disappointment.
Finally, to all the publicans who allow us to perform both inside and outside their establishments and who often provide us poor dancers with sustenance both of the liquid and solid variety - Thank you. To all the dancers and musicians both past and present who have over the years given their time, energy and sweat so generously and who have made the side what it is today - Thank you. And finally to you the public who come to watch, listen and join in, making it all worthwhile and providing us with a reason to vacate the bar and dance - Thank you.
